Is Social Media Good For Us

In the world of Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, and many other social media networks, a question begs to be asked – is social media good for us, or does it do more harm than good? After over a decade of complete dominance, social media has demonstrated that it has its good and its bad sides. But like in every story, one feature needs to be greater than the other, and in this article, we’ll explore if social media is good or bad for us.

The Negative Aspects That Many Are Worried About

Social media networks are more or less open platforms where anyone can express themselves. And in some cases, it has been proven that it’s been a good way to promote bad things. The promotion of poor ideals and superficial values is one side of social media networks that we shouldn’t ignore.

Moreover, the danger that comes with social media was noted when a lot of young people confessed to being cyberbullied by their peers. This type of pressure caused many youngsters to feel depressed, anxious, and stressed, eventually, resulting in them feeling disassociated from their own generation.

Additionally, the overuse of mobile phones and other devices that we use to access social media is bad for our health in many ways. For example, it can cause excessive sitting which can lead to back pain or even weight gain. Also, it can be the cause of poor eyesight, and plenty of other conditions.

Lastly, those people who spend too much time on social media are more exposed to different cyber crimes like data theft and information abuse.

However, not everything is doom and gloom.

Positive Sides That Keep Social Media Alive

There are a number of positive sides of social media networks that make them popular even today.

To begin with, social media helps people stay connected to each other. There are some relationships that would simply disappear with time, since people move away from their hometown, change jobs or schools. But with social media, it’s easier to stay connected with your friends and family no matter where you are.

Moreover, these platforms are used to make new friends as well. When you take a look at someone’s Facebook or Instagram profile, it’s easier to see whether or not you have mutual interest, so you can start chatting on any of the available messaging apps.

And just like it can promote bad behavior, social media has often been used to promote charitable causes and other better habits. For example, people have used social media many times to help people and animals alike during the fires in Australia, when considerable funds were collected. Additionally, people now use Tik-Tok to share their stories and their experience, and then they receive the much-needed support from their followers who went through the same ordeal.

And if that wasn’t enough, social media provides the ideal environment for introverts to connect with other people. Once upon a time, introverts had to endure social pressure, and their issue wasn’t resolved gradually. Therefore many of them would stay away from any social interaction. But with social media networks, they are now more at ease with connecting to other people, and getting to know them in person once they are ready.

Lastly, social media was used plenty of times to break, or at least, reduce the stigma of mental illnesses, emphasize the importance of sexual orientations, and point out to the inequalities among sexes.

So even though there are many bad sides that come with overusing social media, there are numerous positive sides to it as well.
