Different Types of Virtual Reality

VR or Virtual Reality is in the simplest terms a computer-generated experience in which with the help of various devices like headsets, gloves, or screens we try to imitate reality in the best possible way. At the moment you can enjoy a virtual experience of different museums and galleries. There are even virtual tours of some cities. And even though you are not physically present at that location you will be able to explore it by using the latest technology of the modern age. However, there are different types of VR and each of them engages users in a specific way. Let’s take a look at each of these types.

Non-immersive Virtual Reality

In this type of VR experience, you can interact with the virtual environment but only through the computer.

In non-immersive virtual reality, you can take control of some characters or even perform some activities. However, the virtual environment won’t be interacting with you. One example of a non-immersive VR is a video game like Witcher 3 – The Wild Hunt. Through your character, you have an effect on the environment. Also, you have control of some of Geralt’s aspects.

Fully Immersive Virtual Reality

The complete opposite of non-immersive VR experience is called fully immersive virtual reality. The main feature of this type of VR is that it creates a feeling of physical presence for the person who is in the experience. Moreover, this type ensures a realistic experience in the virtual world where you need to have a feeling that certain things are occurring to you. But, for the fully immersive type, you need several pieces of equipment like body detectors, VR glasses, and gloves. The role of the sensors is to transfer data into the virtual world thus creating a real-time experience.

Semi-Immersive Virtual Reality

As its name suggests, a semi-immersive VR is something between fully and non-immersive ones. You become a part of the VR environment with the help of a VR headset and you can interact with it, but other than the visual and the sound effects there are no other sensations that create a realistic feeling.

Augmented Reality

Augmented Reality allows the user to see the real world through a screen but alter it virtually. One example is the game Pokemon Go.

Collaborative VR

In this type of VR, people from across the globe can meet in the virtual environment and take the form of projected 3D avatars.
